Description
This Safety copper fire extinguisher is old enough that it pre-dates the use of the UL logo and is labeled as being "Underwriters Laboratory Inspected". It was manufactured by The Safety Fire Extinguisher Co. in New York City. I'm guessing it dates pre-1920. It hung in my family's firm which was founded by my grandfather in 1912, so it may be as old as that. I don't pretend to be an expert in fire extinguishers, so the last 50 years of its provenance is all I have to go on (It was hanging on the wall when I came to work for the company as a kid) and, after a long lifetime of service, I took it out of usage more than 40 years ago.It will be shipped empty.
This would make a great collector's item for a former firefighter or for turning into an interesting historical lamp, a great centerpiece or conversation piece.
The amazing patina on the body and embossed plaques give outstanding appeal to this piece. This is a RARE extinguisher as it has the original brass embossed plates. Everything on this piece just speaks and tells a fantastic story of fire fighting history. DO NOT MISS OUT!!!!!!! This antique's copper body has a fantastic row of rivets, in great condition, running down the back. The hose and the connectors are in good condition. The extinguisher measures 24" tall and about 7" in diameter and weighs about 17 pounds. The extinguisher does have a few minor scratches and a ding on the back (shown in the photos), but overall it is in very good shape. There are no holes in this item. This is a truly beautiful piece. If you collect fire fighting history, steampunk, or Americana, do not miss out on this beautiful collector's piece.
